"Kawakanjo" is a traditional event performed from ancient times for appeasing the water spirits of the Kano river to protect the villages from lethal and destructive floods which have been repetitive in the river history.
On a bamboo frame of about 3㎡ a raft is made knitting wheat straws. In the center of this raft, "Ikada", torch is set up, lighted at dusk and sent down the river skipped by young boys chanting with a distinctive "hayasi" voice "Wow, Wow, Wa, Hai" which is eagerly answered by the children standing on the river side "Wow, Wow, Wa, Hai".
The location is near the Kano River Bridge "Kamijimabashi" in the Izunokuni city, access is 15 minutes on foot from the Izu Hakone Railway Takyo station or, if you go by car, park at the Roadside Station IZUNOHESO and walk 7 minute from there.
Everybody is invited to come.
